The short answer

Buy linkable white LED bars if you are lighting a shelf, and a clip light if you are lighting one plant in one bad corner. Judge them on what they publish — a named diode is a checkable claim, a wattage is a comparable proxy, and "full spectrum" on its own is a marketing phrase. Then get the fixture close, because distance changes delivered light more than any realistic wattage difference does.

This site has pages about lit plant stands and lit shelving — furniture with a light attached. This page is about the light itself, which is a different purchase and the one you make if you already own the shelf. It is also, for most apartments, the better first purchase: a set of bars under a bookcase you already have costs a fraction of a new lit unit and lets you choose the spacing.

It is a category where the specifications are unusually poor, so this page ranks on transparency as much as on performance. That is a deliberate choice rather than a fallback: when almost nobody publishes output, a manufacturer willing to name the actual diode it uses is making a claim that can be looked up, and that is worth more than a larger number nobody can verify.

What the published figures actually mean

  • Wattage is electricity going in, not light coming out. It is a fair way to compare two fixtures of similar type and size, and a poor way to compare a 16-inch bar with a 58-inch shelf system. Divide by the area it has to cover before comparing anything.
  • Color temperature in kelvin tells you what the light looks like, not how well it grows plants. Anything from about 4000 K to 6500 K grows houseplants perfectly well; the lower end reads warmer and is easier to live with in a room you sit in.
  • "Full spectrum" is not a specification. It has no agreed definition and appears on nearly every listing in the category, including some that publish nothing else.
  • A named diode — an actual manufacturer part number — is the strongest signal available here. It is a claim you can look up against published performance data, and a company that names its component has committed to something.
  • PAR or PPFD figures, where they appear, are the genuinely useful measure. Almost nothing at apartment prices publishes them, and this site does not have the equipment to check one that did.

Distance beats wattage, and it is not close

The most useful thing to understand about grow lights is not on any listing. Light from a source spreads out as it travels, covering an area that grows with the square of the distance — so doubling the gap between the fixture and the leaf leaves roughly a quarter of the intensity on it.

What an extra foot costs

relative intensity = (reference distance / actual distance)^2

at 24 in instead of 12 in: (12/24)^2 = 0.25 — about a quarter of the light

This is why a modest bar six inches above a plant beats a powerful fixture two feet away, and why an adjustable mount is worth more than extra watts. The distance guide has the full version.

The practical consequence is that mounting matters as much as the fixture. Magnetic and clip mounts that let you put the bar right above the plants deliver more usable light than a brighter fixture on a stand that has to clear them. It is also why a single lamp above a tall rack disappoints everything below the top shelf.

Choosing the format

Running cost, which you can calculate exactly

A rare pleasure in this category: this is arithmetic with no missing variables. Multiply the published wattage by the hours per day and divide by a thousand for kilowatt-hours, then apply your own tariff. A 40 W fixture running 12 hours a day uses 0.48 kWh, which at typical residential rates is cents rather than dollars. Even a large multi-bar setup is a modest line on a bill.

What we deliberately do not recommend

Purple red-blue fixtures for a room you sit in. They target the wavelengths chlorophyll absorbs most strongly, which is real and modestly more efficient, and they make it impossible to see what color your plants are — which is how you spot almost every problem a houseplant has. And we do not recommend any fixture whose listing publishes no wattage, no color temperature and no diode information, because there is then nothing at all to judge it on.

LM301H EVO is a named, documented, third-party-testable component. Full spectrum is not. A listing that tells you the diode is a listing whose claims you can check, which is the standard this whole site is arguing for.

Digital dimming and a timer built into the controller removes the separate mechanical timer that every other light here needs.

It is a bar, not a stand. You are buying light and mounting it to something you already have.

5000 K is published, and that matters. Color temperature is the specification that decides whether a grow light is livable in a room, and 5000 K is daylight-neutral rather than the pink-purple of a red-blue fixture.

Linkable means one outlet runs the set. Four separate lights on four plugs is how a plant shelf ends up with a power strip on the floor.

Magnetic mounting works on a steel shelf and not on a wooden one, where the supplied clips or tape become the mounting method.

22 W on one plant is a genuinely useful amount of light. The same 22 W spread across a six-tier shelf would be nothing, which is why per-plant clip lights outperform their wattage.

4000 K is warmer than the 5000 K bars and noticeably less clinical in a living room, at a small cost in usable output for the plant.

A clip needs something to clip to, with a lip. Shelf edges work; a windowsill usually does not.

Red and blue diodes target the wavelengths chlorophyll absorbs most, so per watt they are more efficient for the plant. That is a real advantage and it is why commercial growers use them.

They also turn a room magenta. In a studio where you sleep six feet from the shelf, that efficiency argument loses to the fact that you live there.

The timer is the underrated feature. Plants respond to day length, and a light left on continuously is worse for many of them than a shorter, timed cycle.
