Editorial policy

What we will and will not publish, where every figure has to come from, and what happens when we get one wrong.

Sourcing

Every factual claim on this site falls into one of three categories, and each is treated differently.

  1. Computed figures — pot weights, required ratings, plants per square foot, light intensity ratios. These come out of published constants through a model that is documented on the methodology page. They are calculated at render time from one shared function, so no page can print a figure that contradicts the method it links to.
  2. Quoted specifications — weight ratings, dimensions, wattage, color temperature, pot fit. These are the seller's claims about the seller's product, and they are presented as such rather than as measurements of ours. Where a listing publishes no figure, that absence is stated on the page.
  3. Horticultural guidance — drainage, watering, light, propagation. Sourced to university extension services and equivalent institutional references, linked at the bottom of every page that relies on them.

Every page carries a sources list. A page with a factual claim and no source is a page that is not finished.

What this site will never publish

  • A test result we did not produce. Pot & Prop has no test bench and has handled none of these products. We will not write “in our testing”, “we found” or “our reviewers”, and we will not imply hands-on experience we do not have.
  • A rating or review of our own. No star ratings, no scores presented as measurements, and no Review or AggregateRating structured data anywhere on the site. This costs us rich results in search and it is the correct trade.
  • A testimonial. We have no customers and therefore no testimonials. There is no testimonials section rather than an invented one.
  • A price we have not verified. Prices render only from a live, date-stamped data layer. When it has nothing fresh, the button says “Check price”.
  • A credential we do not hold. No qualifications, no expert panel, no years of experience, no professional titles. Scooter M. is an enthusiast, and that is the whole claim.
  • An invented contact detail. There is no address or phone number on this site because there is no premises. Publishing one to look established would be the same category of dishonesty as everything else on this list.
  • A link to a page we have not built. Internal links point only to pages that exist. Planned content stays in the plan.

Independence

Rankings are decided by the criteria on the methodology page and by nothing else. Commission rates are not consulted when ordering picks. We accept no free products, no sponsored placements, no paid links and no guest posts. The disclosure page covers the funding model.

Every roundup names the buyer each pick is wrong for. That is a policy, not a stylistic habit: a list on which nothing is ever unsuitable for anyone is a catalog, and a catalog is what an editorial process produces when it has stopped being one.

Dates and updates

Every page shows when it was published and when it was last meaningfully updated. We do not refresh a date without changing the content — a date is a signal about the content, and rotating it to look current makes the signal worthless. The same rule governs the XML sitemap, which reports each page's real content date rather than the time of the last deploy.

Corrections

Because the figures here are computed from a shared model, one wrong constant is wrong on every page that uses it. That makes corrections unusually valuable to us, and the process reflects it:

  1. Report it through the contact form or to info@potandprop.com. Say which page and which figure.
  2. We check the arithmetic and the source. If the model is wrong, the fix goes into the model and every page that depends on it is corrected at once.
  3. Substantive corrections are noted on the page and the modified date is updated. Typos and formatting are fixed silently.
  4. If the correction changes a recommendation, the recommendation changes. There is no version of this where the arithmetic loses to the ranking.

Accessibility and readability

Contrast ratios are checked against WCAG AA rather than assumed. Tables carry proper headers, images carry real alternative text, and every page works without JavaScript enabled except for the contact form. Where a specification matters, it appears as text and in a table rather than only inside an image.
