The Best Plant Stands for Balconies

A balcony is the only outdoor space most apartments have, and it is a genuinely hostile environment for furniture designed indoors. It rains on it. The sun is direct rather than filtered through glass. It is windier several floors up than at ground level. And the drainage, such as it is, runs across the floor the stand is standing on.

That rules out most of what this site recommends elsewhere. Bamboo grays and splits. Uncoated metal shows rust at the welds within a season. Wood-veneer shelves on a metal frame delaminate. The stands on this page are here because their listings publish a rust treatment, and in most cases a weight capacity as well — which is a striking contrast with the indoor category, where almost nothing publishes a number at all.

Measure the depth first

This is the step that causes the returns. Balconies are typically long and shallow — often four to six feet long and only three to five feet deep — and the depth is what runs out. A stand 16 inches deep against the railing leaves very little walkway, and a balcony you cannot walk onto is not a balcony.

If the honest answer is that no stand fits, the balcony's usable growing space is the railing rather than the floor — rail-mounted planters are the product for that, and they carry their own set of cautions about what hangs on the outside of a rail.

Wind is the constraint indoor stands never face

A balcony several floors up is windier than the ground, and a tall rack loaded with plants presents a large area to it. The stand does not usually blow over on its own — what happens is that a top-heavy plant catches a gust, the rack rocks, and a pot comes off the top tier. Several floors up, a falling pot is a serious matter rather than a mess.

• Heaviest pots on the bottom tier, always. A 12-inch pot at 25.5 lb of watered mix is ballast down low and a liability up high.
• Keep planting low and dense rather than tall. A tall plant on a tall rack is a lever on a sail.
• Put the rack against a wall, not against the railing, where the building shelters it and nothing can go over the edge.
• Check it after any storm. Powder-coated feet slide on wet tile, and a rack that has moved has told you something.
• Check your building's rules. Many leases restrict what can be placed on a balcony, and almost all of them restrict what hangs on the outside of a railing.

Rain changes the weight arithmetic

Indoors, a pot is saturated only just after you water it. On a balcony a wet spell keeps every pot at its saturated weight for days at a time, and an unglazed or perforated shelf that drains freely is doing real work. These are the computed figures the stand is carrying in that state.

Two of the stands on this page publish real capacities — 150 lb and 240 lb — which is enough headroom that a fully loaded balcony rack is nowhere near the limit. The ones that publish nothing are not automatically weaker; they are simply unverifiable, and on a balcony that is a reason to load them conservatively.

What we deliberately do not recommend

Taking an indoor bamboo or wood-shelf stand outside for the summer. It will look fine for one season and be unusable by the next, and the failure is usually a shelf rather than the frame. We also do not recommend solid-tray shelves outdoors — rain collects in them, which drowns the plant and adds weight the frame was not sized for, so perforated or bar shelves are the correct choice. And we do not recommend anything unbraked on wheels on a balcony with a drainage slope, which almost every balcony has.

A balcony is usually long and shallow, and depth is what runs out first. At 10 inches deep this leaves a walkway on a balcony where a 16-inch-deep stand would not.

Publishing each tier height is unusually useful: 23.25, 16 and 8.75 inches tells you exactly which of your plants clears which shelf, instead of leaving you to measure a photograph.

150 lb across three tiers is comfortable for eight-inch pots at 7.5 lb of saturated mix each. The stackable design means two units give you six tiers on the same footprint if the balcony is narrow enough to need that.

240 lb total is a real number and a generous one. Even loaded with seven 10-inch pots at 14.7 lb of saturated mix each — about 103 lb of mix before the pots themselves — it is at well under half its published rating.

The anti-rust coating is the specification that separates a balcony stand from an indoor one. An uncoated indoor metal stand put outside will show rust at the welds within a season, and bamboo will gray and split.

Seven tiers on a rectangular footprint is a lot of plant positions, but a balcony is windier than the ground and a tall loaded rack is a sail. Keep the heavy pots on the bottom tiers.

On a balcony the difference between a plant that thrives and one that sulks is often three feet and two hours of afternoon sun. A stand you can roll is a stand you can put in the right place after you have watched where the light actually falls.

Perforated shelves matter outdoors in a way they do not indoors — rain has to go somewhere, and a solid tray becomes a bath that both drowns the plant and adds weight the frame was not sized for.

Brakes on two of the four wheels is the right arrangement. Unbraked casters on a sloped balcony drain is how a loaded rack ends up against the railing.
